Dr Dean Hoatson is a principal research geologist in the Onshore Energy and Minerals Division of Geoscience Australia, Australia's national geoscience research and geospatial information agency. Geoscience Australia provides independent geoscientific information to government, industry and the community for the sustainable development and management of Australia's natural resources and environment.

Dean is a specialist in mafic-ultramafic rocks and associated nickel-copper and platinum-group element deposits. He has published comprehensive studies of the geology and economic potential of many of Australia's Precambrian mafic-ultramafic rock suites. These include the layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions of the Pilbara Craton, Halls Creek Orogen in the East Kimberley, the Arunta Region of central Australia, and the komatiites of the Gawler Craton. Dean has also written several review publications on Australia's nickel and platinum-group element deposits. Dean is currently involved with a minerals exploration promotion project that is aimed at delineating Proterozoic mafic-ultramafic magmatic and mineralising events in Australia.
